Happy Pride Month!
Governor Jay Inslee, upon request from the Washington State LGBTQ Commission, signed the 2021 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Two-Spirit, and Intersex Pride Month.
Pride Month is a time for the recognition of our diverse LGBTQ+ communities, celebration of their contributions to our state’s history and culture, and fight for LGBTQ+ equality and liberation. Throughout this month, follow us on social media as we share the stories and experiences of the ANHPI LGBTQ+ community. For ANHPI LGBTQ+ organizations and multilingual resources, check out CAPAA’s LGBTQ+ Resources page. For local organizations and resources, check out the LGBTQ Commission’s Resources page. We also had a discussion of LGBTQ and Anti-Asian Hatred with the LGBTQ Commission last month, which you can catch on their YouTube page. |
Inslee announces eviction moratorium “bridge”
Gov. Jay Inslee announced a “bridge” proclamation today between the eviction moratorium and the housing stability programs put in place by the Legislature. The bridge is effective July 1 through September 30.The bridge is not an extension of the existing eviction moratorium, first declared in March 2020.
Under the new order, new provisions will support renters and landlords until resources and programs become available. More than $650 million of federal relief dollars allocated to assist renters is predicted to be available beginning in July. This is in addition to the $500 million dollars previously released by the Department of Commerce to local governments for rental assistance and will help more than 80,000 landlords and renters. For information on rental assistance available for you, check out the Department of Commerce’s Rent Assistance Providers List for the contact in your county. Why She Must Lead Book Launch
Vasudha Sharma’s new book Why She Must Lead: Bridging the Gap Between Opportunities and Women of Color is a manifesto about the situation of women, especially women of color, but embraces all women, including minority and transgender women, in the United States. Vasudha is herself an immigrant to the United States. Originally from New Delhi, India, today she resides in the Seattle suburbs, where she is a wife, mother of two boys, and doctor of physical therapy.
Vasudha’s educated voice of advocacy is what this country needs as America’s racial landscape changes. As Vasudha states in the book, drawing upon a study by the US census, by the year 2045, people of color will be the majority in the United States, and by 2060, women of color will represent the majority of women. That reflects the world our children and grandchildren will inherit, and they do not deserve to experience the same sexist and racial issues we currently face. As a result, it is time women’s voices are heard.
Making use of painstaking research, Why She Must Lead explores the situation of women of color today, primarily in the workplace, and then discusses ways to improve this situation.
