2017 Legislative Session Update
Today is day 36 of the 2017 legislative session. Nearly 2,000 bills and resolutions have been introduced. Legislators are busy this week holding public hearings on bills to meet two upcoming deadlines on February 17 and February 24 for bills to be approved by policy and fiscal committees.

This week, legislators are holding public hearings on proposed legislation, including:
- SB 5683: Concerning health care for Pacific Islanders residing in Washington under a compact of free association.
- SB 5070: Concerning paraeducators.
- SB 5712: Developing a bilingual educational workforce.

Each year, the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition organizes APA Legislative Day so that Asian Pacific American communities can voice their concerns to state lawmakers in Olympia.

API Focus Group
Representatives of OSPI’s Race & Ethnicity Student Data Task Force are seeking community participants on a focus group to provide feedback on the guidelines the task force has drafted.
The anticipated outcome for the focus group is to gather recommendations that would better align the race and ethnicity categories with community input. Additionally, the task force hopes to receive feedback that will help to create guidelines for schools and communities about the importance of collecting this data.
