Join the Commission for its September Public Board Meeting at the Wapato Filipino Community Center in Yakima County. The meeting will take place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. with an opportunity to make public comments during lunch. Meeting highlights include:
- Welcome remarks from Washington State Representative Alex Ybarra (R- 13th LD);
- Community presentation by Lon Inaba & Stan Viernes on the history and legacy of interracial collaboration in the Yakima Valley;
- Elections to board leadership including and designation of committee assignments.

The Inflation Reduction Act Passed!
Executive Director Hasegawa did a joint press conference with U.S Senator Patty Murray in celebration of the Inflation Reduction Act. This piece of legislation is the most robust climate action package in U.S. history, investing into domestic energy production while promoting clean energy solutions. The bill also includes provisions to lower prescription drugs prices and a 15% minimum tax rate for corporations making $1 billion or more. The White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) and White House Office of Public Engagement is hosting a stakeholder briefing about the Inflation Reduction Act today, Thursday, August 18th at 12:30pm PST.
JACL & OCA National Conventions
Executive Director Hasegawa and Commissioner Kendall Kosai traveled to Las Vegas, NV to attend the concurring conventions of the Japanese American Citizen League and the Organization for Chinese Americans, two national civil rights organizations with roots in Seattle, WA. In attendance were delegates representing chapters from across Washington State, as well as Executive Director of the White House Initiative on AANHPI’s Krystal Ka’ai. Dir. Hasegawa attended an OCA panel on building non-partisan movements to increase civic engagement of AA’s hosted by AAPI Vote.
