October is Filipino American History Month!

Governor Inslee has proclaimed October 2016 as Filipino American History Month in the state of Washington and encourages all people in our state to join in this special observance.

This month commemorates the many ways that Filipino Americans have contributed significantly to American history and as one of the largest immigrant groups in the country, it is important that their history and stories be recognized and told.

Reach out to your local Filipino American organization and see what celebrations are happening near you!

COFA Community Meeting

On October 1, CAPAA held a community meeting in Auburn to discuss ways to improve healthcare access for Pacific Islanders from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Community members had the opportunity to speak with leaders in Oregon, who were successful in advocating for legislation to create a Premium Assistance Program for COFA Islanders. The Commission will continue to raise awareness of this urgent need and support efforts to improve health equity for COFA communities in Washington.

September Board Meeting

The Commission convened a public board meeting in Vancouver on September 17 and heard about efforts to ensure health equity for COFA Islanders, goals for the Multicultural Student Services Directors’ Council, and immigration consequences at the Department of Corrections.

Commissioner Highlights:

  • Commissioner Gurung represented the Commission at the Chinese Institute of Engineers Annual Convention.
  • Commissioner Pen and Nguyen represented CAPAA at the statewide Asian American and Pacific Islander Civic Engagement Summit in Tacoma.
  • Commissioner Wada attended a meeting in September to discuss ways to educate API business owners about contracting and economic development opportunities.

OEO Family Engagement Survey

The Governor’s Office of the Education Ombuds (OEO) is conducting a survey to hear from communities and family members about the importance of school outreach and collaboration. They will use the information they receive to make recommendations to the state about a model for outreach to families and communities.
