New Members Appointed to CAPAA
The Commission would like to thank Commissioners Didi Cabusao and Tashi Khamshitsang for their service and leadership in improving the lives of Asian Pacific Americans in Washington.
Gov. Inslee reappointed Commissioners Ty Tufono and Lynette Finau. He also made the following appointments to CAPAA:
- Nam Nguyen is an Assistant Attorney General, currently representing the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems. He lives in Tumwater and represents Thurston County.
- Roslyn Leon Guerrero works in the Office of Diversity and Equity at Clark College in Vancouver. She represents Clark County.

Task Force on Deadly Force in Community Policing
The Commission invites you to a Community Report Back on Wednesday, July 20. The meeting will inform community members about the purpose of the task force and provide an opportunity to voice your feedback and concerns to CAPAA and our representative on the task force, Toshiko Hasegawa.

Mental Health Awareness in Communities of Color Month
Gov. Inslee proclaimed July 2016 as Mental Health Awareness in Communities of Color Month. Learn how you can promote mental health awareness in your communities here.
The Pacific Islander Health Board will be hosting a Community Conversation on Monday, July 25 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The Community Conversation will focus on ways to destigmatize mental health in our communities and provide information about local resources. Check the CAPAA website for more information.
AAPI Data Disaggregation Initiative
The Commission is working to ensure the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction submits a grant proposal for the US Department of Education’s AAPI Data Disaggregation Initiative. Funds from the Initiative could be used to analyze existing disaggregated data and develop strategies to improve academic outcomes.
Recap of the June 18 Board Meeting
The Commission held a public board meeting on June 18 at Filipino Hall in Wapato. Representatives from the Wapato School District informed members of the Commission about innovative programs and curriculum in the district that promote diversity.
During the Community Forum portion of the meeting, local community leaders shared their work and informed the Commission about critical issues impacting Asian Pacific Americans in the Yakima Valley. Former Commissioner Rey Pascua provided an update about the Filipino-American Community of the Yakima Valley.
Commissioner Didi Cabusao provided an informative presentation on the prevalence of diabetes among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Commissioner Highlights
- Commissioner Dinh convened a meeting with community leaders to identify issues pertaining to the Vietnamese community and strategies to increase civic engagement.
- Commissioners Gaur, Sinclair, Tufono, and Vue represented CAPAA at various APA Heritage Month celebrations.
- Commissioner Wada continues to participate on the Governor’s Interagency Council on Health Disparities and the OSPI LEP Advisory Committee.
