Governor Inslee has appointed Sina Sam to serve on the Commission.

Commissioner Sina Sam is a 1.5 generation Cambodian American, born in a Thai refugee camp and raised in Seattle, WA. She has been active in the Cambodian community in Washington State for almost 20 years and is currently the Program Exam Specialist at Washington State University’s Global Campus.

Commissioner Sam is an advocate for policies that benefit communities of color, gender and reproductive justice, violence prevention, LGBTQ allyship, and immigrant and refugee rights, particularly furthering SE Asian visibility and political representation.

The Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs is requesting applications for candidates interested in serving on our board.

CAPAA has an advisory board consisting of twelve governor-appointed commissioners representing the state’s diverse Asian Pacific American communities. Commissioners serve a three-year term and attend five commission meetings per year. They build relationships in their community and work to find solutions by hosting community meetings, serving on committees, examining issues, and advising decision-makers.

The Commission requests that applications are received by May 9 to be considered for potential openings on the board that may occur in June.

Filipino American leaders in Washington State and across the nation succeeded in 2016 in urging Congress to honor Filipino and Filipino American veterans of World War II by passing the Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act.

At the request of regional leaders, Governor Inslee has proclaimed April 2018 as Filipino American Veterans of World War II United States Congressional Gold Medal Recognition Month.

The Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project Region 8 will host designated events in Olympia on April 14, in Renton on April 15, and in Wapato on April 28 to recognize Filipino and Filipino American Veterans of World War II from the states of Washington, Alaska Oregon, and Idaho.

This Saturday, April 7, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM at Seattle City Hall, the Cambodian American Community Council of Washington will be hosting the ART of Survival, which is an arts event exploring the Cambodian American identity. The event will be the second in an annual Cambodian American community series called Remembering the Past, Welcoming the Future.

CAPAA is a co-sponsor of the event, which will showcase Cambodian Americans who have held onto their identity through the trauma of war and resettlement through art. The event is free and open to the public.

The Commission will be convening on June 16 for the next Public Board Meeting. The location of the Public Board Meeting is to be determined.
