The Washington State Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs will be convening a public board meeting on September 29, 2018 in Spokane, Washington. The Commission will be hearing from local community members and organizations and providing updates from committees and commissioners.

Community members are invited to attend the public meeting. We will also have time for public comment.

The Department of Licensing has launched a website with more information about implementation of REAL ID, a U.S. law established
in 2005, requiring all states to comply with new
identification standards for air travel and entrance to
some federal facilities.

Washingtonians can continue to use Standard Driver’s Licenses and IDs to board all domestic commercial flights until enforcement begins in October 2020. However, as of July 1, 2018, new or renewed standard cards will be marked with “Federal Limits Apply” to indicate it isn’t valid for federal identification purposes.

The Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs is a state agency with an advisory board of 12 commissioners, appointed by the governor, to be a voice for Washington’s diverse Asian Pacific American communities. Our mission is to improve the lives of Asian Pacific Americans in Washington State by ensuring their access to participation in the fields of government, business, education, and other areas (Chapter 43.117 RCW).

Commissioners and staff work in partnership with our communities and state leaders to respond to concerns and bring about positive change and long-term solutions.

Below are activities and outreach conducted by staff and commissioners during the month of July:

  • Samoa Cultural Week/Day: Chair Tufono-Chaussee hosted a table at the Samoa Cultural Day Dinner and presented the Commission’s first Vanguard Award to long-time community leader and former Commissioner, Lua Pritchard.
  • CAPAA statement: Vice Chair Dickinson worked with CAPAA’s Civil Rights & Immigration Committee to issue a statement from CAPAA regarding the Supreme Court’s decision on the travel ban impacting Muslim-majority nations and the federal government’s use of Hirabayashi v. United States as the basis for its legal argument in a recent case.
  • State Supreme Court Minority and Justice Commission Meeting: Vice Chair Dickinson, who is a member of the Minority and Justice Commission, attended a meeting where they discussed the education of judges and bias, the implications of new legal decisions, and planning youth and justice forums.
  • Governor’s Poverty Reduction Work Group: Commissioner Nguyen attended a meeting where they discussed poverty, historical trauma, and healing from a Native American perspective. The next meeting is August 16 at Asia Pacific Cultural Center.
  • Mental Health Awareness Month: Korean Women’s Association, Asian Counseling and Referral Service, and CAPAA spoke with KO-AM TV to promote dialogue and reduce the stigma around mental health issues in the Korean American community.
  • Southeast Asian Pacific Islander Health Education Summit: Project Coordinator Le attended a planning meeting for the August 25 event, which CAPAA is co-sponsoring.
  • ECOSS’s Water Festival: Project Coordinator Le attended the CAPAA co-sponsored event on July 28 to celebrate how water shapes our cultures.
  • Career Connect WA: Second Vice Chair Dinh and Director Itti participated on a conference call with Maud Daudon, who’s leading the effort to connect 100,000 Washington youth during the next five years with career-connected learning opportunities that prepare them for high-demand, high wage jobs.

Community Resources & Opportunities
