OLYMPIA – On Tuesday, November 2nd, Yasmin Trudeau resigned from her position as Commissioner on the Washington State Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs (CAPAA), effective immediately, to serve as the State Senator for the 27th Legislative District. Senator Trudeau will serve the remainder of the term of former State Senator Jeannie Darnielle (27th LD – D). She is the first Muslim and first Bengali American to serve in the Washington State Legislature.
“It is an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Washington state,” Senator Trudeau said. “I am ready to bring voice and visibility to our communities and to use my lived and professional experience to elevate the stories of the most marginalized in our communities. I’m ready to fight for justice and equity throughout the state and create a brighter future for all of us.”
“While CAPAA loses a phenomenal Commissioner, we are proud to have a dynamic advocate for ANHPI communities serving as State Senator,” CAPAA Executive Director Toshiko Hasegawa said. ”We look forward to working with her in her new capacity as a law maker.”
CAPAA will begin accepting applications on Friday, November 5th, to replace Senator Trudeau on the Commission for the remainder of her term, set to end on June 30, 2024.
CAPAA is a cabinet-level state agency whose mission is to improve the well-being of ANHPI in Washington State by promoting equitable access to government services, resources, and policy makers. CAPAA’s role is to identify and examine issues impacting ANHPI’s and advises the Governor, state legislature, and state agencies on issues relating to government services, programming, and changes to state law. CAPAA does not take on individual casework, nor can it provide legal counsel.
