At CAPAA, we are truly fortunate to work with 12 incredible appointees who are fearless advocates for their communities. With hearts full of gratitude, we bid farewell to three tremendous public servants with large footprints and bigger hearts. On July 1, CAPAA Chair Lisa Dickinson, Commissioner Sina Sam and Commissioner Mohan Gurung each bid farewell as they passed their torches to new Commissioners.

 

CAPAA rejects race and location-specific labels to describe COVID-19

The Washington State Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs (CAPAA) rejects the use of terms “Chinese virus”, “Wuhan virus” and “kung flu” to refer to COVID-19. This “otherization” of people of Asian ancestry only drives us further apart as a society and is counter-productive to promoting health and safety of our society.

CAPAA Congratulates Kendee Yamaguchi, Appointed Seattle Deputy Mayor

Seattle Mayor-Elect Bruce Harrell has announced that Snohomish County Executive Director Kendee Yamaguchi will be appointed as Deputy Mayor of Seattle. A former CAPAA Executive Director, Yamaguchi will bring a legacy of public service to the position.

“Following the footsteps of notable community leaders before me, I hope to carry on the legacy of AAPIs who have served our City,” Yamaguchi said on the announcement. “I am honored and excited to take this shining city forward alongside Seattle’s first mayor of Asian ancestry.”
