September Public Board Meeting Notice

The Commission will convene its September Public Board Meeting on Saturday, September 12, from 10 AM – 12 PM. Based on guidance from the Department of Health related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) response, the meeting will be held remotely via Zoom video conference call. A dial-in option will also be available for those who are unable to access the meeting electronically.

October Newsletter: Happy Fil-Am History Month!

October is Filipino/a/x American History Month, a time for us to celebrate the history, contributions, and future of the Fil-Am community, especially here in Washington state. Washington is the proud home of vibrant Indipino communities, Fil-Am led labor reforms, Carlos Bulosan, the Filipino American National History Society, the Young Filipino People’s Far West Convention, Dorothy and Fred Cordova, Uncle Bob Santos, and so many more.

At CAPAA, we are truly fortunate to work with 12 incredible appointees who serve as ardent community advocates. In the past three years, the call to serve the public has never been more urgent. CAPAA Commissioners worked tirelessly to honor and amplify the voices of community members, particularly during the global pandemic. With hearts full of gratitude, we bid farewell to three tremendous public servants finishing their terms of service.

March Public Board Meeting Cancellation

Dear Community Members and other interested parties:

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the CAPAA March Public Board meeting, including the zoom option, is now canceled. The next public board meeting will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2020 in the City of Redmond, King County.

With hearts full of gratitude, we bid farewell to three tremendous public servants with large footprints and bigger hearts. On July 1, CAPAA Chair Lisa Dickinson, Commissioner Sina Sam and Commissioner Mohan Gurung each bid farewell as they passed their torches to new Commissioners.

CAPAA rejects race and location-specific labels to describe COVID-19

The Washington State Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs (CAPAA) rejects the use of terms “Chinese virus”, “Wuhan virus” and “kung flu” to refer to COVID-19. This “otherization” of people of Asian ancestry only drives us further apart as a society and is counter-productive to promoting health and safety of our society.
